Parish Golf Outing June 12 at St. David’s Golf Club

Get your clubs out and start practicing now so you will be ready to play in the St. Mary’s 125th Anniversary Golf Outing, scheduled for Tuesday, June 12. Tee-off time is 1:30 p.m. The cost for golf and dinner will be approximately $140 per person. You can also join us just for dinner, which will cost approximately $40 per person. This event is open to all adults, no matter their age or golfing ability. If you are interested in being a part of this enjoyable event, please sign up on the parish bulletin board or contact the parish office (610-688-1313).

Plan Ahead to Treat Mom! Flower and Bake Sale Youth Fundraiser Sunday, May 13

On Sunday, May 13 (Mother’s Day), the youth group will sponsor a baked goods and flower sale during Coffee Hour. Plan now to pick up a special dessert for Mom, and buy her some flowers. All proceeds benefit the youth group’s summer mission trip to City Camp at the St. James School in North Philadelphia.

Women of St. Mary’s Annual Spring Dinner Thursday, May 3, at 6:00 p.m.

Our own Carole Fowler, a Docent at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, will be our speaker at our Spring Dinner Thursday, May 3. Beginning at 6:00 p.m., there will be wine and hors d’oeuvres. Dinner will be prepared by Jean Wetzel and her crew, and will feature beef stroganoff, ham and asparagus casserole, orzo and fresh vegetable salad, tossed salad and a dessert.

Carole will speak about Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch post-Impressionist painter born in 1853. His work is exhibited at the Museum through May 6; if interested, plan a museum visit today. Please sign up on the parish house bulletin board. A donation of $15 will be accepted at the door.

St. Mary’s Annual Meeting Sunday, May 6 at 9:00 a.m.

St. Mary’s Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, May 6 from 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. in the Church. By scheduling it at this time instead of as a luncheon like in previous years, we hope that more people will be able to attend, and the cost of the meeting will be kept to a minimum. Voting hours will be from 7:30 a.m. to 15 minutes following the conclusion of the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist. Absentee ballots will available through the parish office beginning Tuesday, May 1. Nursery care and a program for children will also be provided beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Forward Day by Day is an excellent tool to help you read the Bible on a daily basis. If you have never used this resource consider doing so this Lent.

St. Mary’s Anniversary – History Notes

In 2012, St. Mary’s is celebrating 125 years of History! Each month we are featuring some interesting historical facts about our church and parish. Here is how our parish began:
• September 12, 1885 – First meeting to discuss “propriety and feasibility” of erecting a church was attended by 53 residents and sojourners.
• George W. Childs donated a lot and cash for the church.
• Rev. Keller from St. David’s Church conducted services at Wayne prior to the construction of St. Mary’s Church and drew up the application for St. Mary’s Charter (which was presented to the provisional vestry on July 9, 1887).
• St. Mary’s Church building was constructed in 1890.
The Rev. Thomas Conrad, the first rector of St. Mary’s, was a vigorous “salesman” for building and furnishing the church. He invested a small fortune of $25,000, and Mr. Anthony Drexel added $5,000 for the purpose of erecting the church, paying architect fees, and providing an organ and church furnishings.
• 1889: Dr. Thomas Conrad, rector of Old St. Paul’s on 3rd Street in Philadelphia (a declining parish he was trying to restore) accepted a call to St. Mary’s with the understanding that he would retain rectorship at St. Paul’s and that an assistant would perform some duties at St. Mary’s.
• 1890, Easter Day: St. Mary’s Church building was completed and consecrated. Vestry minutes stated that the church could not be consecrated so long as there was debt on the property. To hasten the consecration, Vestrymen canvassed the residents of Wayne for contributions. February minutes reported that the canvassers’ “kind reception was universal not only amongst our own faith but all denominations.”
• 1891: The Hook and Hastings organ had 839 pipes. The Vestry proposed purchasing the organ for $90, with $10 down and $5/month payments, but later notes show the organ was a gift from Dr. Conrad.
• The ten bells which still hang in St. Mary’s belfry bear the inscription Easter 1891.
• 1893: Dr. Conrad died suddenly on Trinity Sun-day, at age 58, having seen the Church built, a congregation established, and membership increased tenfold.

Each month from January through May, St. Mary’s collects specific food items for the St. Mary’s, Chester food pantry. For March, we request donations of peanut butter and jelly. Please place your donations in the St. Mary’s, Chester baskets in the parish house hall. Thanks!
