SPIRIT OF THE ROMANTIC
MASTERPIECES OF
19TH CENTURY CHORAL MUSIC
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST
At 4:00PM

On Sunday, November 1st, at 4 pm, St Mary’s Choir will present a concert featuring music of Mendelssohn, Brahms, Saint-Saëns, and Schubert. This is an especially rich era for choral and vocal music, and this concert will showcase some of the best of that era. Our choir and professional soloists will be featured in a way that is far more dramatic and ‘concert-like’ than our normal Sunday liturgical setting. The program includes Mendelssohn’s celebrated anthem ‘Hear my Prayer’ for solo soprano and chorus, Cesar Franck’s dramatic ‘Psalm 150’ and Johannes Brahms beautiful ‘Alto Rhapsody’ for solo voice and men’s chorus. The rhapsody is an extraordinary musical experience, combining the rich harmonies of Brahms, a dramatic role for alto voice, and poignant four-part harmonies of the men’s chorus; the words are from the poetry of Goethe. Vocal arias and ensembles of Saint-Saëns will add elegance and flair to the program, as will Schubert’s grand finale ‘The Omnipotence’.
The choir and soloists will be singing from the chancel location, front-and-center of the church, in concert formation, and accompanied by piano. This concert is being presented as a BENEFIT for the Music Program of St. Mary’s. Please invite family and friends to enjoy this exciting program - choral music of a most enjoyable kind, for all ages. The concert is approximately an hour long, and it could provide a good way to introduce people of the community to St. Mary’s.
